Cipollino: the Onion Boy

Posted by ElizabethG

Based on the children’s story by Gianni Rodari, the main character, Cipollino (“Little Onion”), fights the unjust treatment of his fellow vegetable townspeople by the fruit royalty. With themes that include the struggle of the underclass, good versus evil, and the importance of friendship, this visually appealing ballet is relevant and has a message that all ages can appreciate.

Cipollino was first performed in Kiev, Ukraine, in 1974. This production features the original score composed by Karen Khachaturian, storyline by Edvald Smirnov, and original choreography by Tatyana Andonova of the Sofia Opera and Ballet in Bulgaria. This represents a very rare opportunity to see this ballet, as it is uncommonly performed in the United States. Staged by Elizabeth Shipiatsky, Artistic Director of Ballet Melange.
