Colorado Business Committee for the Arts honored organizations for supporting arts and creative industries

If you talk to some Lakewood residents, they will reminisce about the glory days of West Colfax. Business was booming with motels, restaurants, entertainment spots and more, making the area the place to be.

Today, West Colfax has undergone revival in an effort to bring back those glory days through the 40 West ArtLine — a four-mile walking and biking art experience that goes through neighborhoods along West Colfax Avenue and the W Line light rail in the 40 West Arts Creative District. The ArtLine opened last summer, and it is the reason why Lakewood was named one of 10 honorees at the 2019 Colorado Business Committee for the Arts’ Business for the Arts Awards.

The Business for the Arts Awards are awarded to organizations that go above and beyond to support the arts and creative industries.

“We’ve come a long way. For anyone that has been around (West Colfax) the last five to ten years, there’s been a dramatic transformation, and the ArtLine is a big part of that,” said Bill Marino, 40 West board chair of 40 West Arts and executive director for the Lakewood West Colfax Business Improvement District. “To be able to bring an outdoor art experience to our community and a destination for visitors is a big deal.”

Community planning for the 40 West ArtLine began back in 2011. The ArtLine is similar to the Boston Freedom Trail which features a 2.5-mile-long red line that connects historic sites. For the 40 West ArtLine, a green painted path connects Aviation Park, Walker Branch Park and Mountair Park to neighborhoods, businesses, transit and 40 West Arts District amenities. There are more than 70 permanent and temporary public art installations along the 40 West ArtLine.

“Last year, we went to quite a few art openings, and it was a special experience. It’s been a great amenity to the ward and neighborhood,” said Lakewood Councilmember Jacob LaBure.

Other 2019 Business for the Arts Awards honorees include the Dairy Block, a micro-district in downtown Denver that showcases over 700 pieces of art and Kaiser Permanente Colorado, who’s recent public health awareness campaign included murals that promoted the importance of mental health.

“We applaud all of the outstanding honorees this year for their innovative and impactful business and arts partnerships. Their stories demonstrate how the arts and business advance our economy and strengthen the cultural vitality and quality of life in Colorado,” said Mark Davidson in a statement. Davidson is the chair of Colorado Business Committee for the Arts’ board of directors.
