The history of the Wheat Ridge Police Department

Posted

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Wheat Ridge Police Department. To celebrate, the city will be participating in a variety of events throughout the year like "Love Letters to Wheat Ridge" in February, a 50th Anniversary Gala in March, an Ice Cream Social, and the Carnation Festival. The city kicked off the year-long celebration on Jan. 10 at council chambers where current and former police officers and firefighters reminisced over the department's beginnings and how it got to where it is today.

The Wheat Ridge Police Department was formed in June of 1969 by hiring off-duty Jefferson County Deputies on an hourly basis. In 1970, a proper police force of 13 officers, chiefs and administrative employees and one vehicle was formed thanks to a new sales tax of one percent. Today, the WRPD is made up of 82 officers and 56 vehicles.
